Philosophy for Transfer (AA-T)
In support of the established SB 1440, the Student Transfer Achievement Reform (STAR) Act, and the college’s mission, vision and values, Grossmont College has created the Associate in Arts in Philosophy for Transfer degree. Students earning this Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) will have fulfilled the lower-division major preparation requirements for a degree considered similar at a participating California State University (CSU) campus.
Philosophy represents one of the oldest disciplines at any college, and yet remains one of the most contemporary. Students of this subject are trained in the methodologies facilitating the critical investigation of received notions of truth, justice, knowledge, and beauty, and to rethink such unexamined views. This major not only provides a solid background for transfer in the subject to four-year institutions, but also satisfies anyone who finds common answers lacking. As such, Philosophy is a must in our times. Students should speak with a Counselor to verify that the requirements for either or both degrees have been met. In addition, students planning to transfer to SDSU or UCSD should consult with a counselor or Philosophy faculty member.
The following is required for an Associate Degree for Transfer:
- Minimum of 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units.
- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in all CSU-transferable coursework.
- Minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in the major.
- A grade of “C” or higher or “Pass” in all courses required for the major.
- Certified completion of the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) pattern; see Degree Requirements, General Education & Transfer Information section for more information.
Program Learning Outcomes
-
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Recall, explain, and locate theories and concepts into philosophical traditions, eras, and modes of inquiry; and
- Analyze individual and institutional belief systems, including one’s or their own, to evaluate philosophical assumptions about truth, ontology, values, reasoning, and methodology; and
- Utilize those evaluations in the creation of revised justified beliefs; and
- Apply philosophical methodologies to everyday encounters and inquiries.
